Who loses a tooth, especially in the front of the mouth, usually asks the same question: “Will I be without a tooth during healing?” The modern answer to this concern is called immediate loading, a technique that has changed the way implants are done and restored smiles to patients in much less time.
What is Immediate Loading?
In traditional treatment, the patient receives the implant (the titanium pin) and has to wait three to six months for the bone to fuse to it. Only after this period is the crown placed, that is, the artificial tooth.
In immediate loading, the process is different: the temporary tooth is placed on the same day as the surgery or within 48 hours after the implant is placed. In other words, the patient leaves the office with a complete smile, without having to go through a period without a tooth.
It is important to clarify: this tooth placed immediately is usually temporary. It has an aesthetic function and allows for light chewing. After healing is complete, the definitive crown is installed, with ideal finishing and strength.
Why is This Technique So Sought After?
The great advantage is obvious: no one wants to have a vacant space in their smile, especially in the front teeth. Besides the aesthetic impact, immediate loading offers other benefits. The patient can start chewing right away (even with restrictions), reduces the total treatment time, and experiences less psychological discomfort. In selected cases, it is also possible to perform simpler surgeries without the need for extensive gum flaps.
When is Immediate Loading Possible?
Here is the most important point: not every patient can receive immediate loading. This technique requires specific conditions, and it is up to the dentist to carefully evaluate each case. The main factors analyzed are:
Quality and quantity of bone: the implant needs to be well fixed in the bone at the time of placement. When the bone is firm and in sufficient quantity, the initial stability is greater, allowing the temporary tooth to be placed immediately. In very soft or insufficiently voluminous bones, it is best to wait for traditional healing.
Primary stability of the implant: the dentist measures, during the surgery, how firm the implant is. There is even specific equipment for this. If the stability is high, immediate loading is indicated. If it is low, it is safer to wait.
General health of the patient: people with uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smokers, those with severe osteoporosis, or undergoing immunosuppressive treatment, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy.
